Our recent project was about providing relief to those suffering from the Amphan cyclone in the Sunderbans. Cyclones have wreaked havoc across the centuries, causing repetitive symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, and flu.
The victims of Dayapur village and Adibasi Pada, in the Sundarbans, faced similar issues. In the aftermath of cyclone Amphan, water had been contaminated with faeces, silt, and other debris, which could cause water borne and infectious diseases like Malaria and Typhoid. According to a study by Disasters (2004), the drinking quality of water samples deteriorates drastically after cyclones due to bacteria growth that causes impurities.
To avoid this, we had raised funds, around ₹90,000 to provide the villages with Lime Powder (chuna) to purify water. Hydration is vital for maintaining homeostasis (stable internal environment). Due to the soaring temperatures, the villagers had often faced heat strokes, dehydration and were generally low on energy. We have provided them with ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) to mitigate their distress.
Furthermore, due to the novel coronavirus, people had to use their Sarees and Dupattas to cover their faces, and others often resorted to complete isolation, making it difficult to be in contact with the outside world, especially since communication networks were down. This is why we had distributed reusable face masks by Garbage Free India for protection against COVID-19. Through this, we have supported Garbage Free India’s cause to help local tailors maintain a stable income for their families.
